Chandosik presents Birangona (War Heroines)

This play is a gender-biased exploration of struggle during the independence war in 1971 and its aftermath. Sacrifice and loss are part of the unique plight faced by women in any war and the fate meted out to many during 1971, regardless of background, was particularly savage. Humiliation was far more common than recognition of heroism, and this recital performance seeks to redress the balance a little by recounting the brutal and true stories of four individuals who were tortured, and despite escaping death, continue to suffer a result of the horrific atrocities committed.

Chandosik is a non-profit organisation established in 2016 dedicated to working with young British-Bangladeshi people living in the UK, particularly in London, to attain a greater understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh. With a regular programme of cultural activities, poetry recitations and local history tours, Chandosik continues to explore and celebrate Bangali traditions. The organisation’s work also involves the legacy of the 1971 war in Bangladesh, and aims to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroines who suffered so terribly.
