All In London Review

Camden’s latest Jamaican diner

Review Image
Ma Petite Jamaica is the latest addition to Camden’s Inverness Street, round the corner from Camden Market. There is something of a revolving door of restaurants here, with the exceptions of Hache and Bar Gansa, which have both been open for over a decade.

This one is a Caribbean-themed diner, with a suitable ragga soundtrack playing on the night we visit. The menu has staple dishes like jerk pit meats and curried goat.
Starters are huge - ackee and saltfish comes with two piping hot dumplings, and there’s a very rich chick pea and pumpkin curry, with a large serving of roti.

Escovitch is tongue-tinglingy spicy, a Jamaican classic made with fried snapper. To give you an idea of how fiery this is, it’s made with Scotch bonnet chillis, one of the hottest peppers in the word (to be scientific, it’s rated between 100,000 to 350,000 on the Scoville scale, making it the third hottest pepper in the world). The menu doesn’t tell you this, so if you’re a novice to chillis food this is helpful to know. It comes with grilled carrots, onions and peppers, as well as fried cassava.

The jerk pork comes in two sizes, we go for the bigger 250g serving. It’s a bit tough unfortunately, and also has fried plantain, a large helping of rice and peas, and a pot of very creamy coleslaw. We also get a tasty side dish of onion and callaloo, which is the Caribbean equivalent of spinach.

The food is ok, however faces serious competition given that Camden has really upped its game in terms of food recently. What we do recommend is their very good selection of well-priced rums, cocktails and beers like Red Stripe, Dragon Stout and Carib.
