Alongside the exhibition Labour’s Own Sounding Ideal, an on-going research project by Anneke Kampman, Pump House Gallery is working with artist and illustrator Amy Pennington to transform the Project Space into an ‘editing suite’, as we investigate how popular culture shapes and recycles stereotypes.

Taking the archetypal narratives displayed in music videos as a starting point, the project explores the performance of stereotypical images, questioning how identity is constructed and the roles we perform. Working with visitors and families, drop in to the gallery’s Project Space as we create a bank of words and pool of images of stereotypical profiles, places and phrases that can then be collected, changed and moved around to create new, more accurate and complex characterisations.

VISITOR INFORMATION AND FAMILY WORKSHOPS
Visitors are welcome to drop in to the gallery’s Project Space at any time during exhibition hours. Additionally, families are welcome to come and take part in free workshops on Sunday 27 January, 10 and 24 February, 10 and 24 March, 12 – 4pm.

Free family workshop ‘Cover image’
10 February 2019, 12 – 4pm

Drop in to this workshop as we work with artist Amy Pennington to create a band name, album title, track list and make a 12-inch vinyl cover. Your music can be a mix of all genres, or genres that have never even existed before. What do you want your band to be like – could Aretha be your lead singer, with yourself on bass, and a werewolf on maracas?

This free workshop has been designed and delivered by artist Amy Pennington, as part of the InHouse Project: Mis-Shapes. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Free, no booking required.

Free family workshop ‘Mis-shapes, mistakes, misfits’
24 February 2019, 12 – 4pm

Drop in as we experiment with green screen and stop motion animation to unpick the stereotypical images and narratives that surround us. Join artist Amy Pennington as we play with the pool of images that has been created by visitors over the course of the exhibition. Mix up these narratives to create new, more creative characters as we explore the different tales we can tell.
