All In London Review
Delicious, authentic Indian cuisine in a beautiful setting
A few minutes’ walk from the cathedral, Bengal Tiger has been in Carter Lane since 2000, specialising in North Indian cuisine with an extensive menu as well a bargainous Express Lunch Menu that’s just £6.95 for one course or £9.95 for two – definitely worth noting if you need a working lunch.
The starters were absolutely delicious; we plumped for a mixed platter to try a little bit of everything, consisting of crispy vegetable samosas, melt-in-the-mouth creamy paneer tikka, flavour-filled onion bhajees, sheek kebabs and tasty chicken tikka. I freely admit I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to spice, so my main was the classic butter chicken, Tandoori-grilled tikka of chicken simmered in smooth gravy with honey, cream, powered almond and coconut, mild but full of flavour. My friend’s Lamb Jalfrezi, I’m told, was a deliciously spicy mix cooked with peppers and tomatoes, garnished with fresh green chillies, lime leaf and coriander, packing a punch in all the right ways.
I have to admit the dessert could have been better; we shared a creamy, caramely, pecany tart which in all honestly tasted a little bit cheap and overly sweet – a stark contrast to the tasty starters and mains. I can’t comment on the whole dessert menu having only tried that one so it might have been a blip, but next time I’d rather save myself for the starters and have a naan and side with my main methinks.
Bengal Tiger can boast delicious, authentic Indian cuisine in a beautiful setting, with a striking bar and attentive and knowledgeable staff; definitely worth a visit, just skip the dessert.
