The Bird Photographer of the Year competition brings together some of the most stunning bird photography currently on offer.

Featuring a vast array of images, entrants include everyone from experienced photographers to keen amateurs and hobbyists. Since its inception in 2015 the competition has grown year-on-year not just in the number of entrants but also in the breadth and standard of photography, and the range of species featured. The spectrum of competition entrants is a reflection of the huge diversity found among contemporary bird enthusiasts and nature lovers around the world. Their passion for ornithology and conservation are vital to the survival of the world’s bird populations and the environments they inhabit. Key to an understanding and appreciation of the world around us is a visual celebration of the planet’s birdlife. Bird Photographer of the Year is proud to play a part in this process, and extremely grateful to Swarovksi Optik UK for sponsoring this exhibition.

The Bird Photographer of the Year competition comprises seven categories: best portrait; birds in the environment; birds in flight; attention to detail; bird behaviour; garden and urban birds; and creative imagery. A first prize is awarded to the winner of each category, and awards are also given to the runners up and third place images. An overall Competition Winner is selected from the category winners and a Best Portfolio prize is given to the photographer who demonstrates the most outstanding range of abilities and techniques from a submission of six or more images. In addition, the competition has an award for Young Bird Photographer of the Year, aimed at entrants that are 16 years of age or younger.
