The second annual London Petanque Championship will be held at Crystal Palace on 8th June 2019. The inaugural event last year proved a huge success and this year the event has doubled in size and is billed as one of the UK’s biggest one-day Petanque events. The sport is a skillful and highly tactical open to all-comers of all ages and abilities, and makes for an interesting but easy to follow spectacle, which is played in a genteel and friendly spirit,

This year there will be 128 teams and nearly 400 players competing with teams from all over the world – USA, New Zealand, Africa, right across Europe to include many top French household names from their national sport– plus participants from all corners of the UK, including local teams too from the Capital too. Last year’s event was won by a team comprising a Dutchman, a Hungarian and a Mauritian; they beat a top French team in a thrilling final in front of a large cheering crowd, and of the iconic sphinxes that are associated with this historic venue.

On the day itself, which starts at 9.30 am and stretches through and beyond tea-time, many current and former world champions will be vying for top spot. The event will offer the rare opportunity to savour the skills of France’s world Number 1 Dylan Rocher, and of five times men’s world champion Bruno Le Bouriscard which will definitely provide the main focus of attention for players and spectators alike.

In addition to the competition, the iconic location and the refreshments and entertainment available, another key attraction is the prize pot. Cash prizes totaling £5,500 will be up for grabs which makes it the biggest for the sport of Petanque in the UK.

There is free admission for the public and there will be a high volume of passers-by who will stop for a while to watch a game or two while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat amidst the carnival atmosphere.

Last year’s event was featured in the Evening Standard and on BBC Radio London. This year we expect much more media interest as the event grows and attracts more attention.
