All In London Review

The Prince of Wales comes up smelling of fresh roses

If you judge your pubs on their ‘weird’ then the Prince of Wales in Clapham’s Old Town will appeal. Run by either an eccentric or a full-blown hoarder, the interior is the stuff of legends. You name it and it’s probably somewhere hanging on a wall or suspended from the ceiling. Part Victorian curiosity shop, part junk shop throwback, it’s amazing. Stuffed animals, boats, memorabilia… I could go on and on.

Aside from the collectables there’s a lovely pub to be enjoyed. Your classic bar stools are squashed together, a varied selection of drinkers inhabits the place and the staff are friendly enough to engage you in more than the obligatory, hello. There’s nothing out of the ordinary on the taps, a pretty pedestrian selection of lager and a couple of ales and the same goes for the wine. They don’t serve food either but it sums up the pubs rather rag tag appeal in that you’re welcome to order takeaway to your table from the local pizza delivery.

The music is a rough and ready selection of indie, grunge and rock n roll on this occasion and we’re told that the weekly quiz is always popular. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in a place as interesting as this. Judged against the rest of Clapham’s pubs, the Prince of Wales comes up smelling of fresh roses, and that’s opposed to the fake, plastic bouquets of many of the others, which distinctly whiff.

Great pub! They offer a nice selection of beer and the decor is amasing. Good prices too.

I couldn't agree more with the review of SunshineBabe. The Prince of Wales in Clapham Old Town is a rare gem of a local pub. We stumbled upon this lovely little place after a gourmet shopping trip at Moens and Sons butchershop in the old town. The shopping had left us with quite a thirst and we were suffering the effects of a lively wine filled night before. We decided the only solution was to find somewhere for bloody mary's. The POW bloody mary's acted as a miracle of god. They were made by the pub manageress who we have since come to know as Tracy. She is truly a miracle worker with tomato juice, spices, and vodka!

We have now come to know the pub as a bit more of a regular venue and have experienced not only their bloody mary's, but also their good selection of wine and real ales. We have even partaken in the Thursday night pub quiz, which makes for quite a competitive event (get there early to get good seats). The landlord does the MC-ing and is quite the show man. Note, don't make sarcastic comments when you are up at the bar, the mic really does magnify all comments.

Have I mentioned the decor? It is eccentric, quirky and cool. It really adds to the atmosphere. I have read rumours that the pub is owned by Vivienne Westwood, but I can assure your that although she sometimes drinks there, she definitely is not the owner.

If you get hungry, they offer pizza via a delivery service from a local restaurant. We've had it a few times and it is consistently good and is a good investment when you are there for the quiz in order to limit your hangover the following day.

This pub is definitely worth a visit especially if you fancy a local pub with a quirky atmosphere and a good selection of drinks, people and music!

As if by a miracle I happened upon this eccentric gem of a real old English pub in Clapham. It has to be one of the last true local pubs left in the area. It has good wine, lager & beer & the bar manageress makes the best hangover curing Bloody Mary’s in the universe. The staff & locals are friendly & were even very welcoming when I came in with my godchildren. The décor is avant-garde bric-a-brac from the pub landlord’s extensive travels, a fascinating collection of antiques & collectables. Definitely worth a visit.
