Join artists Goia Mujalli and Cecilia Charlton as they share the process behind their collaborative artwork Fruits of Origin , commissioned especially for Tender Touches, while teaching participants the foundations of creative embroidery.

Participants will be asked to bring with them an image of a fruit as inspiration - something linked to personal experience or memory. They will create their own fruit-based embroidery experiment: sewing onto aprons ready-made by Mujalli and Charlton while guided by the principles used by the artists themselves.

The workshop is set against the backdrop of the exhibition, allowing participants to closely view and interact with the show throughout the workshop.

Participants will leave with a basic understanding of creative embroidery as well as their own embroidered apron to take home.

This workshop is part of the Open Space’s programme of events for Tender Touches, an exhibition curated by Huma Kabakci and Inês Neto dos Santos at AMP Gallery, 17 May - 30 June 2019. Tender Touches takes the form of an ‘art cafe’ where everything – from the food to the furniture and tableware – is both a functional object and an artwork. Drawing on the food-based practice of Inês Neto dos Santos, the exhibition blurs the boundaries between the studio, the gallery and the dining room, using food as a catalyst for conversation and debate.

Goia Mujalli was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is currently based in London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2017, and the Slade School of Fine Art in 2015. Previous exhibitions include: Labyrinth 2018 (solo) at Mercedes Viegas Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, Biriba? 2018 (solo) at The Arcade Project, in London, A?gua-Viva 2018 (solo).

Cecilia Charlton is an American artist living and working in London. She is a recent graduate of RCA with an MA Painting, but most commonly creates work within the medium of textiles. Her recent exhibitions include: Lifeline as Medium, 532 Gallery, NYC; SURGE: the East Wing Biennial, Courtauld Institute, London; Rogue Objects, UCL, London; FAKERS, Thameside Studios, London.
