In honour of London Craft Week, Swiss fine writing and drawing instrument company Caran d’Ache will be celebrating their world-renowned colouring pencils with three days of dedicated demonstrations at Paperchase Tottenham Court Road. From 9- 11th May, Caran d’Ache will invite visitors to experience the tangible, experiential elements of the step-by-step process of pencil-making.

Caran d’Ache invites the public to enter into their mesmerising, vibrant world and discover the secrets behind the making of their iconic coloured pencils. The pencils, used by renowned artists for generations may look like a simple tool but there are more than 30 steps involved in creating each crayon. From the selection of the purest pigments and woods, to the shaping, varnishing and sharpening of a pencil; the crafting of high-quality drawing instruments requires a unique know-how. One of Caran d’Ache’s Colour Pencil Masters will be on site to take visitors on an experiential journey into the delicate skills of pencil-making craftsmanship.

Caran d’Ache will be taking over Paperchase’s top floor space. Throughout these experiential demonstrations, visitors will be encouraged to use all of their senses to stimulate their creativity: visitors can feel and smell the wood, touch graphite stones and admire the vivid pigments After visitors’ senses are enlivened, they are invited to explore all things colour, with drawing walls and activity tables and plenty of Caran d’Ache’s pencil crayons around to inspire the artist in everyone with live demonstrations of a variety of artistic techniques.

The workshops will pay homage to the company’s craftspeople who maintain the quality and sensibility of the swiss made products. Each coloured pencil is a synthesis of the spirit, rigour, determination and expertise of specialists in more than 90 skilled workers based exclusively in Geneva, in the great tradition of Swiss manufacturing and in line with the sense of social and environmental responsibility which the brand holds dear.
