Alexander Baron was one of the great English novelists of the twentieth century and his work is unjustly neglected today. He wrote vividly about life in the old East End and unsurpassed novels about the Second World War. He went on to become one of Britain's top screenwriters too. Born Alec Bernstein in Hackney in 1917, he grew up in the world of the old East End and fought the fascists on the streets of the East End in the 30s. His cult classic The Lowlife -- set in Hackney at the end of the 1950s -- is becoming recognised as part of the canon of twentieth century literature.

Dr Andrew Whitehead, veteran BBC correspondent and leading historian of English socialism and London literature has recently co-edited -- with Susie Thomas and Ken Worpole -- So We Live: the novels of Alexander Baron, just published by Five Leaves and the ?rst book devoted to Baron and his writings. In this talk, he will look at the man, his roots in Stoke Newington and his literary achievements -- and he will read from Baron's novels.
