All In London Review

Nice location and atmosphere – disappointing and expensive food

Review Image
I was excited when M Grill opened in the new development right opposite Twickenham train station. While the area is well served with restaurants and bars, M Grill offered a slightly more up-market option. Or so I thought.

I booked a table mid-week to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

The courtyard outside is pretty with an attractive water feature. From the outside, M Grill looks smart and inviting. You enter into the bar area which is spacious and cosy – even though it has a large TV screen which I always find irritating unless it’s a sports bar. But I guess that’s to attract customers on rugby days.

I hovered by the reservations table – the staff appeared to be deep in conversation at the bar. So I wandered into the restaurant area which was quiet. I returned to the reservation area and the maitre d’ was now engrossed in a conversation with someone who came in after me. It wasn’t quite the welcome I would have hoped for.

Still, the restaurant area is pleasant enough – there are raised booths to the side which would be great for groups and banquette style seating through the centre. There are some amazing light fittings which give the place a romantic and intimate feel. The music all evening was good – not too loud. There were some couples but mostly small groups – some mixed and some just women.

At the end you can peer right into the kitchen area. Perhaps too much of a view. And when something got burned we could all smell it.

The waiting staff were young and attentive – but not strong on engaging with us. But it is relatively new so perhaps their confidence will grow,

I ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc (£8.50) which was excellent. My friend ordered a glass of Chilean Veramonte (£7) which was undrinkable. I quickly ordered her a glass of Malbec (£9) for her instead which was good. Thankfully they didn’t charge me for the Veramonte.

The tiny complementary homemade warm bread twists were lovely.

My companion didn’t want a starter but I tried the fried jerk chicken (£9.95). Served on a wooden block there were two good sized pieces of chicken in a sort of bread crumb batter. The hot sauce supplied added a real kick to the taste.

But the steaks were really disappointing. They had no stilton sauce (it’s a week before Christmas!) so there was a choice of gravy or black garlic sauce. As it was a special occasion we both choose sirloins (£34.75). I asked for mine medium rare and my friend for medium to well done. I have never seen sirloins look like this – great lumps of meat (aren’t sirloins usually a relatively flat cut?). My friend’s steak was so rare she sent it back to be cooked some more. Mine was pretty red in the centre and I left a good deal of it.

We both had three-fried chips as a side (£4.50) and just as well as these were small portions. My friend felt hers were cold. The shared spinach and rocket salad (£4.50) was ok.

Disappointed and still hungry we decided to have a dessert. Sticky toffee pudding (£7) with a sorbet-like cream confection. It was heavy and overly and cloyingly sweet. My friend left hers.

The bill came to £148.95 with service which I thought was very expensive considering the quality of the food – and we had only three glasses of wine between us. I shall not be returning.
