This afternoon I went into this branch of Evans on my way back from work in order to buy a pump for my road bike. I had looked at their pumps online and this had raised a few technical questions.
A sales assistant was standing next to the pumps, so I said -needless to say, in a normal and polite tone- 'I'm looking for a pump.'
His response was extraordinary. He said sarcastically, and loudly so that others standing nearby could hear: 'you're standing right next to them'.
To infer sexism from this encounter may be glib; perhaps he would also use such an aggressive tone towards other people he considers, based on their appearance, to be his inferiors in the world of bikes. However, the fact that I am a young woman and a keen cyclist did seem to be more than he could cope with.
Launched in 1921, Evans Cycles sell a wide range of bicycles and accessories. They also provide a 'custom fit' service. This branch specialises in touring and road bikes, a wide range of MTB, Hybrids and Urbans, wheel building, immediate repairs, and an extensive range of clothing and accessories.
