Levant Bar & Restaurant combines the spices and colours of the Middle East to produce a restaurant with a warm hue that serves a variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes including mezze.

All In London Review

A touch of Middle Eastern decadence

I came across a sumptuous affair at Levant recently. The ornate décor, delicious food and supremely accommodating staff made me feel like a wealthy heiress despite being a self proclaimed pauper.

Situated on a cute backstreet off Wigmore Street, we decided to brave the inclement August weather and sit outside to smoke shisha. A recent convert, I can’t claim to be an expert but never fail to marvel at being able to smoke flavours like peach, apple and melon.

We were only intending to have shisha and cocktails, but glancing through the menu we thought maybe we should order a few mezze to share. We ended up with a huge platter of little dishes, stuffing ourselves silly to the point where we could barely move. Plates of hummus, falafels, grilled halloumi, potato and coriander balls, mint & yoghurt dip, pastries filled with feta, and tahini dissapeared as quickly as they’d arrived. Unfortunately our greedy appetites would make this a rather expensive evening (bearing in mind we did have a few cocktails), but I’d defy anyone to be able to resist all this wondrous food.

A mixed nut roast turned up which we endeavoured to find out the ingredients of (I am allergic to hazelnuts; strangely enough no other nuts affect me). Our waiter wasn’t sure and simply said as it was a mixed nut dish it probably contained everything. I contented myself with my vanilla and lime juice cocktail, and I’d also recommend the Assif cocktail, a blend of cranberry, lemon juice, and Absolut mandarin served with pomegranate seeds over the top, highly palatable for those with fruitier appetites. Upon eventually learning the mixed nut roast contained no hazelnuts I launched myself upon it. It didn’t disappoint.

As it started to rain we moved along with the other customers to the shelter of a shop roof next door. The waiters brought our stools and shisha for us, along with a game of backgammon for the people sitting next to us, who were enjoying mint tea with a five tier tray of baklava and fruit. I made a mental note to return during the day to try this decadent option.

The cold finally got the better of us and we moved inside to the restaurant area. As ornate as a palace but tastefully so, the intoxicating smell of incense prevailed, while heavily made up Middle Eastern women swooped past. Being half Iranian myself, I am accustomed to the prominent lipstick, over arched eyebrows and nose jobs, and found it all rather amusing. As the belly dancers walked in, my friends relayed an account of a dancer grinding against their meal last time they were here, and we wondered whether it might be time to leave, as we found the prospect a little embarrassing.

A couple sat down next to us for dinner despite it being after 11pm, handy when so many restaurants close their kitchens at 10.30pm. We caught a few seconds of the dancers’ hip swivelling routine just before leaving and noticing the girl next to us launch an attack on her boyfriend should he get distracted.

Full stomach? Now let's hit the floor...

If the thought of belly dancers sashaying around your table makes the blood rush to your cheeks, you might find Levant a tad uncomfortable, for they will persist until you agree to get up for a dance. This opulent eatery has a DJ playing Eastern music till 3am, and the Middle Eastern food’s not bad either, having been awarded the AA Rosette Award in 2010 and 2011.

London has more venues where you can puff away on a hookah than you might think. We've put together a list of some of the best...

Levant is located off Wigmore Street, a quiet stretch of road tucked behind Oxford Street to the west. The dimly lit, exotic environment is a perfect respite from the bustle of Central London. Sit down at the Mezze Bar, enjoy the incredibly decadent interior and partake in shisha on the terrace.

I took some friends to this restaurant for their 40th birthdays - and I have to say, we didn't have the best time.

The atmosphere is an exotic mixture of belly dancers, incense, eastern decor within an extremely busy and loud party ambience. If you are looking for somewhere to talk, this is not really the place.

The food is fresh and mostly good although a little oily and often cold within a minute of arriving. One particular annoyance is that on seating, we were told that we could only order from the preset menu at £40 per head and so we did not really have much of a choice. We had a particular problem as we had 3 vegetarians and 1 meat eater and were initially told we could only have 2 veg and 2 meat set meals - after some debate, they finally allowed us to have 3 veg, 1 meat.

For £160, we had a few tasty dishes (meze style) - all fresh and well presented but rather small - moussaka and lamb main dish, again tasty but not hot - a rack of deserts, fruits, nuts and mint tea. We also purchased some wine which was too young and fizzy and asked for this to be changed - the staff seemed rather surprised and short tempered - so why allow you to taste the wine? At £21 a bottle, I would say that I expect a good wine.

Overall, the food is great but grossly over priced and the lack of choice in individual dishes (because they said they were just too busy) forces you to spend £40 each. The service is poor, unfriendly - we had to wait nearly 1/2hr to get someones attention to get the bill! If you want to spend a lot of money of reasonable food, the sight of the odd belly dancer and some pretty unacceptable levels of service, then this might be the place for you. I personally would not recommend this place.
