The Fan Museum in Greenwich is the only museum in the world dedicated to all aspects of fan-making. The Fan Museum has a collection of more that 3,500 fans- the majority of which are antique, some dating from the eleventh century. As well as permenant exhibitions, the Fan Museum hosts various loaned collections from other institutions. Exhibitions showcase fans from their historical and sociological contexts. Over the centuries fans have been used for practical use but also as ceremonial items, fashion accessories and status symbols. Many of the pieces feature equistite designs and artwork on their leaves. The scale, quality and diversity of this often overlooked, but socially significant item is illustrated with informative and thought provoking displays. The buildings at 10-12 Crooms Hill which house this collection are themselves grade II listed buildings dating from 1721. The impressive buildings and secluded situation are the perfect setting to enjoy this beautiful and serene collection. Since the museuam opened in 1991, a Orangery has been erected- perfectly designed to remain in keeping with the buildings. A small Japanese style Garden also acts as a tranquil and beautiful compliment to the exhibits. The Fan Museum charges a very reasonable admission fee and features a charming gift shop.
