All In London Review

Bodean’s is the tip of the trend, the one that will still be around when the burgers get too greasy and the sliders shrink too small

The wave of American ‘fast food’ imports knocking the gastro scene off its stride is fine by us. We like it, in fact, the only thing we dislike about it is when a venue capitalizes on the trend and marks the price up for hip’s sake. We do not like that. Luckily, at Bodean’s what we’re dealing with is an American BBQ restaurant that was selling pulled pork when most of London didn’t even know what it was. To us, Bodean’s is the tip of the trend, the one that will still be around when the burgers get too greasy and the sliders shrink too small. So this is less of a review and more of a salute.

Located on Poland Street (with other London locations) the restaurant is split into two levels. Upstairs is great if you’re all into sports and hovering on a high stool, sandwiched between other BBQ fans. But if you want a bit more group privacy, head below.

American sports are also shown on screens in the basement restaurant, just given less prevalence. The area is done up with rich red booths, low lighting and big tables. Set up for the comfort of consuming the excellent comfort food on offer.

Drinks start and finish at the XL bottles of Grolsch for us, but others may want to embrace the rest of the menu. That includes beers like Moosehead, Lone Star and Negra Modelo along with a good range of wine.

The pulled pork and burnt ends are the stars at Bodean’s and there is a range of ways in which you can order them. The pulled pork sandwich is a large, juicy wedge of meat in a floury white bun served with chips. This is the best value to be found on the menu. Alternatively order the pile of pulled pork and burnt ends that comes as its own meal. The sweet pickings of blackened meat are enough to brighten up anyone’s life. Do it.

There are also ribs, which we can attest to being thoroughly handsome chunks of tender meat (beef or pork). Plus meaty combos, which pair pulled pork, ribs, grilled smoked sausages and chicken together in BBQ medleys. Prices range from between £12.00 per person with a beer to £25 per person with a beer, depending on your need for BBQ.

Bodean’s may not be your Johnny-come-lately artisan cookout but it serves up solid BBQ and some of the most consistent pulled pork around. If you’re a fan of meat, there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy.

Eyes bigger than your belly? We'll see...

All portions are large at this BBQ joint, but you can be extra gluttonous by ordering one of their combos, such as the mammoth platter with half a chicken, pulled pork and sausages.

Having opened in 2002, Bodean’s pre-dates the trend for southern food and BBQ by about 10 years. Various types of barbecued ribs, chargrilled steaks, pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese with smoky chicken are on the menu, plus sports are shown on big screens.

I have never had a bad experience at this Bodean's. Although that is not the case with every branch I've eaten in.

But... the Soho location is top of the pops for BBQ. It was here before the street food revolution and it will be here after. Who can resist a pulled pork sandwich and an extra large swing top Grolsch after an afternoon in shopping, err, I mean, err, watching football!

(I didn't eat at this particular branch, i went to Tower Hill, but can't find that on here).

Anyways, a group of us ate here last night, and I can't see why it received a negative review. Everybody loved their food and tehre was ample of it. The lady who ordered a whole rack of spare ribs was still eating them long after the rest of us ahd finished.

If you order fromt he main menu, though, it can be pricey. Unless you buy a pulled pork sandwich or burger (which is available in the restaurant part as well as the 'bar' upstairs... a previous review said it wasn't, so maybe it's a new thing).

However they do offer a 'Pig Out' for £10 deal, where you have a choice of either a rack of baby back ribs, a double stacked burger or a chicken combo (1/4 chicken, half rack of ribs and pulled pork) PLUS a drink (beer, wine or soft drink). I have to say that that deal is more than value for money. I had the chicken combo and I was stuffed. However, whilst I only spent £10 on my meal ,the lady who ordered the spare ribs, prawn starter, coffee and wine spent just under £40.

I would recommend this restaurant, but only if you have some money to spend, or are happy ordering from the £10 menu!

The concept of Bodeans is excellent, its the only restaurant of its type in Central London....thats the good bit.

Now the bad......The food is simple so should be simple to cook and present, however its not, but don't even try and complain as the staff do not care.

Fancy a long wait to get served and then to get your food and drinks? Well this restaurant tops the lot, the staff are simply the worst I have experienced in years, the only tip I would give them would be to find another job!

Sometimes restaurants have their 'off day's' but this one has had far too many for me to give it another chance.

Bodean's serves some GREAT American style food, some of the best in London! Their staple is bbq, slow cooked pork and beef, fantastic ribs, pulled pork and bbq beans.

There are two sections to this restaraunt, the upstairs is more of a 'fast food' eating area, with a table service area downstairs.

Upstairs you simply grab a seat, order at the counter and await your food, and it isnt long to wait either! With the meats being slow cooked, they are ready to go! The prices are not bad, and you can get a pulled pork sandwich, with fries for about the same as a gourmet burger in the West End. This though, is far more filling and tasty!

Downstairs for me was a much more dissapointing experience. Having eaten in America's south, I know that the food should be already cooked, and ready to go, but the service was VERY slow. It must have been a good 30 mins between starter and main, now I know some people like this, but the wait became irritating in the end.

It isnt a cheap place to eat when seated, starters, mains and drinks for two cost over £50, but upstairs you can grab something very tasty much quicker for under £10. So it gets 7 for the quality of food, and the upstairs, though loses marks for the service. But you cannot hate a place which serves corn bread, I love it!
