This shop has my total admiration. Peter and his staff will always go the extra mile to give the best service and highest quality, freshest fish and seafood. We are so fortunate and blessed in East Finchley to have a shop of such 'distinction'. Not only is the produce superb, but it comes with a real and sincere friendliness. I think I might just have some little experience here, as I have been a regular customer for 40 years. The negative review I read is quite nonsensical. Their is a rule of thumb which is generally correct; you get what you pay for. As Peter the proprietor replied; if you have an issue speak to him rather than post negative comments. However, I'm sure local supermarkets will satisfy your taste and pocket. A. Scott and Son is one of the finest purveyors of fish and seafood anywhere. I could go on but the point is made. Do visit if you haven't already done so. You will be delighted with the quality of produce and service. Once 'hooked' you'll be returning again

I've been a regular here for some time now. The fish is fresh, with good flavour and, most important to me, sustainable - and such great variety. The fish is fresh enough to use in sushi or seviche. Today I had curried mackerel and red mullet. In the past I've had tuna sushi and seabass seviche. I've also cooked seabream with Thai chilli tomato sauce and seafood linguini. The possibilities are endless. The guys are friendly and helpful and will prep the fish for you if you wish. When my mother was alive I'd buy fish for the whole family. Scott's can't be beaten.

I have been shopping at A. Scott and sons for many years, and constantly since Peter took over.
The quality of their fish, seafood, smoked fish, shellfish and many many other products is always excellent.
I am a great lover of Japanese Food and as everyone knows fish for Sashimi and Sushi has to be absolutely Fresh. I have seen quite a few Japanese customers choosing their fish from Peter and all seem to go away absolutely delighted. In fact over time, I have seen a really mixed clientele with difference preferences, and they are always taken care of by Peter and Paul with expertise and great suggestions for special dishes.
There is always a warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble. You can order any special requests in advance and they're always ready right on time.
The watchword for A. Scott and sons is FRESHNESS and QUALITY. This shop is a real treasure. I feel quite amazed - and very lucky that there are so many wonderful fish choices right on my doorstep !

Needed fish for a bbq this weekend and went to them for shellfish - prawns and a bit of tuna. They are so nice and so helpful. I bought some huge prawns which cooked beautifully and the most delicious tuna. Didn't know that they did seabass fillets so bought some of those too. They were superb! Overall I'd say that this is one of the best independent shops I've been to in the area and I will definately return to this fishmongers.

I went to this shop on Saturday just gone.

I was really surprised to find that they did organic meat there too! I bought some salmon, which was delicious and also sausages. The sausages were a big hit with the kids and they asked for more!

I didn't think it was too expensive. The quality of the salmon was superb and the guy there who served me was really friendly too.

I'll be going back to get more stuff for Christmas this week. Great!

I would like to totally disagree with the review above. This shop is a gem. I have been to this shop 5 or 6 times and I have never found the fish to be overpriced and the quality is superb. I'd rather pay a bit more and have a great meal, than go to a supermarket and have cheaper fish, which is not as fresh or hand picked from the market.

The staff are helpful and knowledgeable, the display is amazing and you can ring and reserve if you want something special. Try getting a supermarket to cook your crabs to order! I think this shop is one of the best in London and I will continue to support it.

Finally..... Why did the other reviewer buy the fish if he thought it was "overpriced"? He could have left and gone elsewhere if if he felt that he was being ripped off!

The prices are ridiculous and extortionate at this place. It is no wonder that locals prefer to use supermarkets in nearby Muswell Hill and Finchley when prices are this high. I was just charged £11 for 2 Mackerel! One of the cheapest, most abundant fish in our seas! As much as I want to support local independent businesses, shops like this deserve to go out of business when they are putting such a high mark up on produce and ripping off locals. I won't be going back!
Response from peter barnett proprietor of A Scott and Son
Firstly I would like to say to anyone reading this that Ido not pretend any of my fish is cheap.I only sell the highest QUALITY fish.Anyone who uses my shop frequently will tell you this.I do not try to compete with the supermarket fish ( maybe from frozen )as is written on many of their fish products. Now as a reply to the price of mackerel firstly they are not the most abundant fish as stated in fact they are quite seasonal and the prices often fluctuate at present 15 12 11 they are fairly reasonable 2 fish costing about 8 pounds 400gm each. however 6 weeks ago they would have cost ii pounds or so as they were a lot dearer. It is a shame when people knock something they dont have all the facts. The person who wrote this attack on my shop didnt happen to mention any of the specials that we do and the good value offered on the majority of the fish sold.I have a regular customer base of over 500 sales per week and have very few if any complaints. If you have an issue with me come and discuss it with me dont post nasty messages which have no grounds. Come and see what we do and how well we do it regards to all Peter
