Do you enjoy wandering around cold, dark labyrinthine passages underground? You can experience this and more at Chislehurst Caves, a large maze of man-made tunnels that sit 30 metres beneath the ground. Guided lamp-lit tours lead visitors through the caves, which were originally dug up to extract chalk for use in brickmaking. The caves have been open to the public since 1900 for several purposes, including being a live music venue for jazz, skiffle and folk in the 60s and 70s. Before then it was used a storage space for ammunition for Woolwich Arsenal during World War I, and as an air raid shelter during the Second World War. Today it has a rather more salubrious nature as a tourist attraction, although some believe the caves to be haunted. Tours are 45 minutes and take place from Wednesday to Sunday – you’re not allowed to enter on your own – and you’re advised to wear warm clothing and sensible footwear as the ground is uneven. There is free parking, a café and a gift shop.
