After opening on the site of an old quarry in 1979, Thorpe Park initially consisted of educational exhibits and pavilions with aircraft displays. This all changed when The Tussauds Group (who also own Chessington and Alton Towers) purchased the park and decided to turn it into a rollercoaster theme park. If it’s gravity-defying rides, vertical drops and exhilarating water rides you’re after, Thorpe Park is the place for you. There is even a ride inspired by gory slasher movie Saw, if being suspended 100 feet upside in the air isn’t terrifying enough. Other rides include the Samurai, which spins its passengers 360 degrees in the air, the Slammer, which propels you 105 feet into the sky, and the Colossus, best described as a quadruple corkscrew – make of that what you will. Although primarily designed with teenagers and young adults in mind, the youngest members of the family don’t need to miss out on the fun, as there are carousels, a miniature railway and a paddling beach. If it’s a short break you’re after, Thorpe Park often has special deals with local hotels that are worth checking out. The park opens from March till the beginning of November, and opening times vary depending on the season.

This is a great place for teenagers to come - the rides are very impressive. For younger children though who can't/won't get on the adrenaline rides, there is very little to do that doesn't cost more money. There is the Wet Wet Wet play area which is nice, but obviously only in warmer weather. Other than that it's all those games that are £2 upwards a go. I won't go back until our children are much older as it's just not worth the cost.
