Though it’s not one of London’s best known parks, Southwark Park is large - encompassing 25 hectares to be precise, witha boating lake, tennis courts, an art gallery and a café all within its grounds. The park was first unveiled in 1869; much of it has been restored over the years, including the gates, the lake and the bandstand. Within walking distance of Bermondsey, Surrey Quays and Canada Water, it’s packed full of picnickers on sunny days. The bandstand hosts events in the summer, and the lake has ducks that are always happy to be fed. There is plenty for sports fans too: a football pitch and a bowling green can be booked in addition to the aforementioned tennis courts, which can be used for free. Southwark Park is also notable for having the first public memorial in London dedicated to a working class man, in the form of a drinking fountain that celebrates the life of Jabez West, a member of the Temperance Society.
