In June 2012 this park hosted BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend, drawing thousands of punters to watch international pop stars perform. The event is the broadcaster’s biggest ever free-ticketed live event, and neatly sums up the gentrification of Homerton and the surrounding areas. But Hackney Marches is more usually known for its sporting facilities, which include rugby, cricket and football pitches – this is also the home of Sunday league football, with over 70 matches played here every week. If sport isn’t your bag, it’s also a haven for wildlife, as the conservation area is home to many different types of flora and fauna. In fact, the park is the proud owner of a Green Flag award, which are given to the best green spaces in the UK.
