Arguably, archery is one of the oldest activities, traditionally used for hunting and survival against nature. In Medieval England archery became a sport with a range of tournaments, although this was largely initiated to improve hunting and military skills and was compulsory for all men of fighting age during times of war.

Competitive archery is a far cry from its origins and involves very high tech bows and arrows with fibreglass bows and arrows made of carbon graphite, allowing arrows to be fired at around 150 miles per hour.

Each target has five coloured rings and the competitors must try and get the arrow as near to the centre as possible. Targets vary in size during the Olympic Games between 122 centimetres sand 80 centimetres. Archers always stand at 70 metres away from the target. The archer with the most points is the one that is declared the winner.

During the archery competition there will be both individual and team competitions with a knock-out type approach. This means that all competitors compete on a one to one basis, eliminating one archer each time until only a group of finalists remain.

Archery was part of the early Olympic Games but was dropped in 1920, returning in 1972. Team archery sports only became part of the Olympic Games in 1988 and have since then generated a large following.
