It's origins as a sport are not entirely clear, but there are at least references to Handball in some of the earliest Greek literature. That said, handball only really gained mass popularity in Europe during the mid 19th century.

There are seven players on each team and the aim is to move the ball across the court to be put in the net of the other side. Quite simply the team that scores the most goals wins at eth end of the game. The sport is very fast moving and demands large levels of stamina and strength.

Initially, handball was introduced as a men only game at the Berlin Olympics of 1936 and it was played outside. Later on the inside version of the game with seven players became more popular and entered the Olympic Games in 1972 in its current form. The women’s game was introduced in the next games of 1976.

Handball is particularly popular in continental Europe with crowds of over 20,000 regularly gathering to watch matches.

In the history of the Olympics there has never been a nil-nil draw with scores of 50 goals plus very common. There have however been two cases of the women’s game having to be decided by a penalty shoot out.

NOTE:

- The preliminaries and the women’s quarter-finals will be held in the Handball Arena, Olympic Park

- The Men’s quarter-finals and all semi-finals and finals will be held in the Basketball Arena, Olympic Park
