Triathlon, as the name would suggest, comprises of three different events completed by the same competitor. Swimming, cycling and running are all undertaken one after the other over various distances with the winner being the first to complete the running part of the event.

The sport of triathlon is relatively new and started in California as a means of improving fitness. The first recorded race was in San Diego in 1974. Although triathlons are held over many different distances the Olympic Games maintain the longer Olympic distance which is a 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre cycle and a 10 kilometre run. With the changes between the stages being counted as part of the race, these transitions can be critical to the success or failure of an athlete.

Men and women each have their own races. The first ever woman to win an Olympic gold at triathlon was from Switzerland and the first man was from Canada, showing how international the sport truly is.

Triathlon first became a sport at the Olympic Games in 2000 and immediately generated a large spectator following. It attracts athletes from every continent. London is already in a good position to host the triathlon event as it hosts the largest triathlon in Europe on an annual basis already. The winners will expect to finish in around 1 hour and 50 minutes.
