This independent museum is run by French chocolatier Isabelle Alaya. The items on display once belonged to retailers, chocolate makers and collectors, with some dating as far back as the 18th century, and together they give a detailed history of the production of chocolate both in the British Isles and around the world. After browsing you can also sample a range of chocolates, including Alaya’s very own Melange brand. In addition the museum hosts chocolate making workshops, tastings and sessions tailored for children. Entryis free, but note that it’s only open to the public from Wednesday to Friday, 2pm – 7pm, and Saturday 10am – 6.30pm.

Because chocolate can be educational too, Brixton’s Chocolate Museum has a permanent exhibition which explains its history illustrated by artefacts that date back to the 18th century. There are also detailed accounts of cocoa production and slavery and the history of British chocolate. Not forgetting of course the sweets that are on sale, which are fair trade and from small producers.
