Just off the Chelsea Embankment you’ll find this splendid botanical garden, developed close to the river Thames as proximity to water makes for a slightly milder climate, allowing tropical plants to subsist. The Chelsea Physic Garden was created in 1673 with the aim of being a centre for education and research, and to train apprentice apothecaries to recognise different plants. It is still one of the UK’s foremost botany centres, home to 5,000 different plants, many of which are of medicinal or historical value. Additionally visitors might spot foxes, frogs, orange ladybirds and many more forms of wildlife.

in... London?

Originally founded in 1673 as a place for the study of the medicinal qualities of plants, The Chelsea Physic Garden is now open to the public for large chunks of the year. Admission fees are charged to non-members of what is London’s oldest botanical garden but it’s worth the entrance fee for the beautifully designed landscape.
