All In London Review

Despite being located in the heart of Soho, it might be more at home in The City

Review Image
Archer Street may employ the unique idea of singing bartenders but the fun doesn’t quite seem to seep into the bar’s atmosphere. It is definitely lingering there somewhere but a keenly felt sense of control and organised fun leaves a lot of the ‘spontaneous’ action feeling a little forced. Despite being located in the heart of Soho, it would be more at home in The City where its clear aim of cultivating an opulent experience with a twist might be a better fit.

Attracting a mixed clientele – although arguably the one thing everyone seems to have in common is money – the bar was packed on the night we visited. Primarily filled with small groups of women and men in sports coats, it’s easy to make comparisons with Made in Chelsea.

The décor is stately and we particularly liked the armchairs in the lounge bar and the addition of a sofa outside the first floor toilets – who doesn’t like a seat while they wait for a cubicle? Caught somewhere between a refined champagne and cocktail bar and a party venue, attempting both leaves both sides wanting. With so many specialist bars in the area, Archer Street’s cocktails have some stiff competition. And while they may be experimental (not to mention tasty) the prices are high and knowing that you could be paying the same at the likes of Refuel at the Soho Hotel or Kettner’s is a problem. However, if you’re looking for sophistication with a wild side then you could do worse than choosing the number one bar on Archer Street. The entertainment offers something fresh and we’ll never grow tired of cocktails with names like The Book of More Rum, I Am the Walnut and Frank Ginatra. Plus, if Champagne is your drink then the presence of the Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve as the house is bound to whet your appetite for Archer Street.

It's glitzy, it's glam, it's unapologetic and it's damn hard not to have a good night out here.

A Soho bar with a difference, Archer Street is a medley of sophistication and irreverence. Part hotel bar, part club, one evening there might be all about singing and dancing and the next it might be an appropriate place for an intimate evening for two – you just don’t know, but that’s the beauty.

Came by for the second time the other night and for the second time had to deal with a grouchy doorman. Not sure what was such a problem at 7pm on a Thursday evening. Once inside the bar was fine - not my favourite place for a drink in Soho but when you need a cocktail it will do.
