All In London Review

A good Crystal Palace pub if you're after a quieter, conversation led night on the Triangle

Review Image
Located on the Westow Park side of the Crystal Palace Triangle, the Sparrowhawk is a good fit for this increasingly popular part of South London. And when we say popular, we’re talking about making the trip down for the appeal of this three pointed strip of food, drink and antique shops – just FYI. Spacious and sleek, the pub offers a stripped back, rustic wooden take on the classic pub. While the pub is certainly geared towards eating, there is no less fun to be had if you’re only after a drink. On the evening we visit, table service goes on around us. The staff whizz in and out of us, shunting and manoeuvring us but while it feels a touch awkward as we perch in our stolen space, the balance between those eating and those not keeps the place lively.

Not the warmest of spaces, the Sparrowhawk might not be the type of pub you’d relish spending hours in, it’s neutral décor and dining room look a little too proper. A quieter alternative to the rowdier pubs in the neighbourhood, it’s better than most if you’re looking for a place that encourages conversation.

The menu deviates from the usual pub food – but not too far – and offers a slightly more luxurious style of modern European cuisine. We like that they’ve resurrected the vastly underrated chicken kiev and added the likes of Welsh rarebit and confit duck to keep things interesting. There’s a respectable, if not adventurous range of beer on tap, and a good looking wine list with bottles starting at £16.

While you might not travel to Crystal Palace specifically for the Sparrowhawk, its presence on the Triangle is a welcome one.
