This summer the Theatre will be turning itself inside out. A packed festival programme will bring a flavour of what normally goes on inside the building - in the theatres themselves and backstage - onto the riverside terraces and squares.

Breathtaking aerialists, stunning tango danced in flames and epic juggling are among the highlights of an explosive programme of free outdoor entertainment that will fill Theatre Square for a summer of music and mayhem, divas and daredevils, circus and dance, fire, fury, fun and frivolity.

Events include:

The Pop-up Workshop
Join us for a summer of theatre-making on the Waterloo terrace. Try your hand at puppetry, prop-making and performance with NT artists. Learn about stage combat, costumes and the art of slapstick. All workshops free.

Plus storytelling and intimate performances for the very young, including Cupboard of Surprises for ages 2 – 5 years, Draw Me a Bird for ages 4+, Cloud Man for 4 - 7 year olds, Wise Words, Curious Creatures and a new play about Shakespeare's children, Cesario, for ages 7+, and The Devil, The Tsar & the Three Dry Biscuits for ages 8+.

Then for ages12+ there is What Will Survive of Us? performed by Islington Community Theatre, and for ages 16+, I Would Not, a challenging piece of devised theatre performed by Made in Bristol.

Theatre
Made In China and non zero one
In a first for the NT, we present site-specific commissions from two of our Studio affiliate companies. Made In China's Get Stuff Break Free, from 25 June - 4 July, is a funny and moving parable of consumerism, disconnection and the flickering hope of overcoming them. From 6 - 15 July non zero one's you'll see [me sailing in antarctica] invites audiences to gather round a table in a secret location to explore the way we look and the way we see.

New Views rehearsed readings: theatre to make a difference. Young people write about what switches them on. Readings in the Cottesloe Theatre.

Inside Out Inside
From 9 - 26 June, Me and My Shadow sees an interactive pod, linking four European cities, transporting people live to a shared digital space with life-sized projections and dynamic sound. Two exhibitions, Staging War Horse (18 June - 9 September) and The Making of Timon, in association with the British Museum (17 July - 9 September), will bring backstage to the front of house, following the productions' journey from the National Theatre's Studio, workshops and rehearsal rooms - the hidden spaces that make the Theatre unique.

Propstore
Great street food at reasonable prices in a theatrical riverfront café bar. Open seven days a week from 12 noon; Late Lounge with music Friday and Saturday until 2am. Fully licensed, with Meantime draught beer and Sipsmiths spirits. One of this summer's unmissable hang-outs.
