Bangladeshi cooking gets a rare turn in the spotlight this month as Namaaste Kitchen and Salaam Namaste take their pioneering ‘Regional Food Festival’ beyond India for the first time.

Sabir Karim, chef patron of Camden’s Namaaste Kitchen and Bloomsbury’s Salaam Namaste, comments, “We have British-Bangladeshi restaurants to thank for introducing the nation’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala – as well as the fiery hot vindaloo and madras curry to the UK. It’s a remarkable story; how from 20 restaurants back in 1946, there are now 12,500 British-Bangladeshi restaurants and a curry industry that turns over £4 billion a year. In spite of all that, the food of Bangladesh isn’t actually so very well known. We want to change that. From Dhaka street snack ‘chot poti’ to every Bengali’s favourite dish, fish curry and rice, there are so many unusual flavours to discover.”

Let the journey of discovery begin at two of London’s finest Indian restaurants throughout July when an extensive selection of dishes from Bangladesh will be on offer alongside the à la carte and a London Olympics 2012 menu.
