‘Crossroads’, Dorothea Schilling’s new body of work, is a detour from her familiar geometric paintings. Referring to Constructivism movement that originated in Russia in the 20th century, the artworks in ‘Crossroads’ are a conjugation of sculpture and painting. With this vibrant collection, Dorothea experiments with technique and media, to create a juxtaposition of urban shapes and textures. Yet, the essence of her art remains the same – contrasts in colour and shape.

The series explore movement and navigation in an urban environment. Transit and transportation systems in a large city are repetitive themes featuring in the artworks. Trains, cars, aircraft runways and highways are familiar symbols.

‘Crossroads’ represent how we are directed and distracted by the multitudes and the chaos and energy of life in a city. It promises infinite possibilities in encounters and traps. It is an observation of how we drift between traffic, buildings and people. As in a maze, we reach another crossroad. A deep breath, and we are ready for another challenge.
