Slow train on the rainy day
Poetography by Ron L. Zheng
An exhibition curated by Franco La Russa

25th August - 23rd September 2012
Private view: Friday 24th August 7pm - 9pm

Slow Train on a Rainy Day is a collection about the special, secret place you had when you were young. It might have been a tree house in your back garden, the corner of a closet, or a little grove in the park. A place which calmed you and relieved you of your burdens. This exhibition will take you back to that place of your youth.

Ron L. Zheng’s unique art form, that he has coined Poetography, seeks out connections and fusions among art forms and cultures. The exciting combination of English-language tanka poetry and black and white photography merges traditional Chinese and Japanese frameworks with contemporary Western culture. Since ancient times in China it has been common to apply poetry in a decorative fashion to black ink paintings; Zheng has continued this tradition within his own work as each of his images display the precision, spontaneity and delicacy of the brushstrokes found in the Chinese art which has inspired him. By contrasting the traditional tanka form of the poems with a narrative that depicts moments of the contemporary Western experience, Zheng is skillfully infusing the past with the present and giving authentic, historic art forms a new lease of life.

Poetography creates a dynamic tension that infuses new meanings into words and images. In his work Zheng addresses events that are both commonplace and extraordinary, the result of which is a captivated viewer who finds connections within the pieces to their own lives and emotions. Zheng has stated about his work that “each piece is not complete until it is viewed by another person. People react to Poetography pieces in very personal ways, using their own experiences to reach an understanding of the piece”. The mesmerizing beauty of Zheng’s work only enhances the journey of emotion and memory this exhibition will take you on.
