Fun Lovin’ Criminal, front man of Huey and the New Yorkers and the best thing on BBC 6 Music. We caught up with Huey Morgan ahead of his headline DJ set at The Big Chill House on Saturday 27th April to talk music, burgers and the most romantic spot in London to watch the sun go down…

How long have you lived in London and where do you call home?

Well, I always say home is where the heart is, wherever my family is, so that’s just right here in London. And I’ve been living here for about five years.

Favourite place in London during daylight?

There’s a special part of the [Hampstead] Heath, but that’s all I’ll say.

Favourite place in London after dark?

Well I’m married and I’ve got a young kid now so I’m not out after dark all that much. But, I’d say the Electric – they did the renovations really well. I enjoy a few drinks there with my wife on occasions.

Where’s the best burger in London?

The Palm. Straight up.

You can applaud our Wikipedia research skills here. You once wrote a wine column, right? Where’s a romantic spot in London for a glass or two?

It’s true. It’s true. Hmmm, my backyard? A lazy evening in the garden with the sun going down, with my wife. We’ll hold each other, watch the sunset, you know. Haha.

What was the first record you ever owned?

First 7" would have been On the Radio by Donna Summer. The first 12" I ever got was Earth, Wind and Fire - The Greatest Hits, Volume 2. But then I guess I’ve always been eclectic because I went out the next day and bought the Clash.

If you could play with any musician past or present who would it be?

I’d like to play rhythm guitar with Jimi Hendrix – just sit there like “Yo, Jimmy, er, what was that chord?!’

What’s on your stereo right now that you just can’t turn off?

Did you see that documentary, Sugar Man? The musician Rodriguez. I can’t stop listening to that. It’s like we were cheated. South Africa got him and we all missed him. Everyone talks about Bob Dylan, how he came from a well-to-do family and just went down to the Village and let rip. Well this guy came from the bowels of Detroit. He recorded a few tracks and they just never went anywhere. So now, he’s getting play. And then there’s also Gary Clark Jr, Cody Chesnutt. I’m a musician’s musician.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Out of trouble! Haha. Well, seriously, hmm, a fireman. After the Marines I actually put my name down but then three weeks before my number came up the Fun Lovin’ Criminals got signed.

What is your most treasured musical possession?

My black Les Paul Custom. If you saw me playing back then or even now, chances are that’s what I’m playing. That is the guitar.

If you could go back in time to any era what would it be?

Oh, I’d go all the way back. I’d go far, to like, Medieval times. Can I come back when I want though?

Yes, just push a button and you’re back – things could get hairy. ‘Who’s this guy in the weird clothes?’

‘Exactly, or why does this guy speak so much?’ Haha.

You’ve got a special show coming up on April 27th at The Big Chill House. Have you got anything up your sleeve?

Actually I do. I’ll be doing the show with Tom Whalley, my producer from my radio show. We’ll be playing two songs each and then swapping over. We’re quite similar but we do differ musically so hopefully it should make for an interesting show. I’m psyched!

Huey DJs the headline slot at The Big Chill House on Saturday 27th April alongside Hackney Colliery Band, Dom Servini, Scrimshire and his producer Tom ‘T-Bone’ Whalley.
