Supplying nutritious food to the community during the COVID crisis

When the threat of COVID-19 began, the team at Moxon’s firmly believed they played an important part in supplying nutritious food to the community and made the decision to keep the shops open. They closed their restaurant, Next Door in order to help the swamped fish shops and quickly organised a delivery service for the vulnerable who couldn’t get out.

When lockdown began, it was turbulent. Existing long-term suppliers stopped overnight, transport was curtailed and an air of chaos hung in the air. Determined to stay committed to the industry, staff and customers alike, new suppliers were sourced and connections with fisherman who were stranded from their market were quickly made.

With restaurants closed and exports halted, some fish that were previously hard to sell in volume due to expense dropped dramatically in price. Moxon’s made the decision to sell the fish under its pre lockdown purchase costs in order to introduce new fish to customers at reduced prices and support the struggling fish industry. As a result of COVID-19, Moxon’s are currently selling 3 times more John Dory at the SAME price as 20 years ago, twice as many Turbot and twice as many Seabass. The only difference being the quality of UK fish has improved enormously.

With stores in Clapham South, Islington, East Dulwich and South Kensington, Moxon’s offers a wide range of house-smoked as well as fresh fish caught daily from their hand selected suppliers in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Sussex and Scotland. A Moxon’s deli section also includes a selection of homemade fish pies, fish cakes, sauces and stock. Available to safely collect in store or delivery to your doorstep (for the vulnerable), Moxon’s remains firmly in play for its community and staff alike.

This catch of new customers marks a real opportunity for Moxon’s with the hope that they will continue to support them well into the future.

Owner, Robin Moxon comments - “It’s been great not only being able to keep on our incredible team, but also supporting the industry and our fantastic suppliers during this incredibly tough time. We feel so fortunate that we continue to serve our loyal customer base, ensuring they have the same fresh and delicious fish that they rely on us for, and even introducing them to different types of fish that they normally might not have gone for, now that they have gone down in price."

Managing to keep suppliers, staff and customers happy as well as casting their net wide during these turbulent times is some much needed positive news for the hospitality industry. Hooray!
