This neighbourhood restaurant is something of a veteran, as it opened almost 30 years ago. A founding member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, food is sourced as locally as possible and from small producers. Charlotte’s Place is a new entry on our list this year at number 88.

Head Chef Greg Martin just hasn’t been able to stay away from the place, quite literally. He first started working here in 2004 before leaving to spend a year at La Trompette. In 2007 he returned as Sous Chef, before departing once again for Sydney. He’s been back at Charlotte’s Place as Head Chef since 2009.

Martin tells us his guilty pleasure (food-wise) are Cornettos, he believes foraged items will be popping up on even more menus in the future, and his most valuable experience as a chef was doing 28 double shifts in a row. “They say practice makes perfect – I certainly got to practice my menu!"
