Built between 1696 and 1712 and originally designed to serve as the Greenwich Hospital, The Old Royal Naval College which is located at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich’s World Heritage Site, was also previously used as a Royal Navy training centre between 1873 and 1998. After the Navy moved on in 1998 the Greenwich Foundation charity took responsibility for looking after the buildings and their grounds. The University of Greenwich now occupies three of the main courts, Queen Anne, Queen Mary and King William while the Trinity School of Music has found a home in King Charles court.

Buildings with bling
Too time and cash poor to nip over to the Vatican City? Pop to Greenwich instead, where the Old Royal Naval College has London’s very own answer to the Sistine Chapel. The riverside building is instantly recognisable because of its imposing twin towers, one of whichcontains the domed Painted Hall, withmagnificent frescoes on the walls and ceiling created by Sir James Thornhill - it took him 19 years to complete them. Designed by Christopher Wren, this used to be the ostentatious lodgings for the navy before becoming a college two centuries later.

Been here for a couple of events (works do and a wedding) and thought both were really well organised and the buildings and backdrop stunning. Have to admit the weather was fab on both ocassions, but even so the Royal Naval College was beautiful - would love to go back for a sightseeing visit too so that I can appear a bit more educated on the history of the place. The chapel is worth a visit in its own right - beautiful!
