Camden is shaking its scruffy image in favour of becoming a tourist haven, particularly at weekends when elbow room is scarce around Camden Lock and the market. The colourful shops selling tacky souvenirs, tattoo parlours and food takeaway stalls are still there, however the Stables Market is a great place for second hand clothing and furniture. Camden remains London’s premiere are for gigs, particularly where indie music is concerned, and old favourites like Underworld, Electric Ballroom, Barfly and the Jazz Café still attract the punters. It’s also a hugely popular spot for drinking (as traipsing over kebab boxes at midnight on a Friday night will certify) from celeb-spotting at The Good Mixer and the Hawley Arms to playing pool at The Camden Head.
