Opportunistic estate agents and journalists are branding Deptford as the new trendy place to watch, much to the amusement of locals. While Goldsmiths College in nearby New Cross has brought with it an influx of arty students and emergence of live music venues, Deptford is still struggling to recover from the decline of the Docks in the 20th century, the main source of employment in the area. Crime and unemployment figures are high, however the local council is intending to regenerate the high street and build affordable homes, as well as artist units and exhibition spaces, in-keeping with Deptford’s new boho image.
