This affluent area is beloved of its locals thanks to its villagey feel and slight insularity (Margaret Thatcher lived in a gated community in the area after her time as Prime Minister). Dulwich Village has preserved its 18th and 19th century buildings, in fact most of Dulwich is residential and hasn’t been commercialised, although the Village does contain shops and restaurants. Dulwich Park offers horse riding, tennis and bowling and there are various historical houses to visit managed by the National Trust. East Dulwich is home to many independent boutiques, gastropubs and a market which takes place on Fridays and Saturdays.
