East Ham is home to a large Asian community, which is reflected in the shops and eateries on the high street, which sit side by side with traditional pie and mash shops. Elsewhere there are uninspiring shops and the indoor East Ham Market Hall has halal butchers, Afro-Caribbean cosmetics shops and greengrocers. Unfortunately the area’s deprivation is evident, child poverty is a big problem and East Ham is fourth in terms of unemployment in the UK. As the Olympics are being staged in the borough, the local council is pushing children and teenagers to take part in sports, and the East Ham Leisure Centre has a swimming pool and climbing wall amongst other amenities to entice them.
