Not to be confused with south London’s leafy Forest Hill, Forest Gate is gaining popularity thanks to (whisper it)having relatively affordable properties. This fact coupled with the 2012 Olympics has meant that estate agents and first time buyers are turning their attention to this part of east London, which counts Idris Elba and Plan B among its famous offspring. There’s no tube, but it’s currently well connected to central London via the rail, and when Crossrail is completed it’ll be even more commuter-friendly. Despite its name, it’s not quite at the entrance to Epping Forest, although there is plenty of lush greenery to the north at Wanstead Flats. In terms of shops the main thoroughfare is Green Street, home to numerous Asian clothing shops and restaurants serving Indian and Middle Eastern food.
