Located centrally in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields has an enviable location close to both Liverpool Street Station and Brick Lane. The name Spitalfields is an abbreviation of the phrase ‘hospital fields’ and refers to the hospital of St Mary Spital that was central to the region in the 17th century.
Modern day Spitalfields is renowned for its Sunday market which began in the 17th century and still attracts around 20,000 visitors every Sunday. This market is now being hotly preserved as the city sprawls outwards threatening the area with new build office blocks. Spitalfields remains an important cultural and art centre with local residents including Tracey Emin and Stuart Brisley.
