Surrey Quays borders Rotherhithe and faces Canary Wharf over the river; the area is part of the Docklands, although most of the warehouses where the dock workers used to live have now been demolished to make way for expensive apartment blocks. The area boasts a curious mixture of wealthy new arrivals, deprived estates and Scandinavian and white South African communities, with several pubs and shops catering to the latter. There are also numerous flatshares populated by students and young people. In terms of entertainment, if the acoustic guitar-playing at the Aardvark doesn’t float your boat there is a leisure park containing an Odeon Cinema and several family-orientated restaurants.
