Walthamstow is an area of contrasts, from the bustling, bargain-filled street market which is Europe’s longest, to the charm of the village with its upmarket restaurants and quaint furniture shops. The name Walthamstow comes from “Wilcumstowe”, Old English for “welcome”, and the area still lives up to its name. Grocery shops of numerous ethnicities sit side by side on the high street as well as friendly cafes, cheap clothing stores, and a traditional pie and mash shop. Market traders loudly advertising their wares can be heard up and down the market, but if it’s tranquillity you’re after you can spend an afternoon at the William Morris Gallery.
