The birthplace of Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine has long been one of London’s poorest areas, however the area around Elephant & Castle is due to undergo a massive regeneration programme. The shabby shopping centre is set to be demolished and in its place hotels, shiny new retail outlets and apartment buildings will appear, catering to new residents who will bring wealth to the area, or will they? The cost of ex-council flats is on the rise, meaning those on low incomes are already being priced out of the area, while the shopping centre, grim as it may seem from the outside, is relied on by many locals. Gentrification aside, the Old Kent Road – made famous by Monopoly – is an important shopping street, and the world’s most famous nightclub, Ministry of Sound, is a 5 minute walk from Elephant & Castle tube station.
