Suburban Wanstead borders Epping Forest, making it practically part of the countryside. The area’s wealth is evident thanks to large semi-detached and detached properties; there is a villagey atmosphere and the high street favours independent shops over chains. It is also home to Wanstead House, a stately home so lavish it was once known as the ‘English Versailles’. Local residents benefit from having a multitude of pubs and restaurants (fish eateries are a specialty) on their doorstep, while the Central Line links to Central London. Despite its leafiness and upmarket feel, rents are still cheaper than in most inner London districts.
