King’s Cross steakhouse Bar + Block has introduced a super speedy new 90 minute bottomless brunch offer (available 10am-4pm every Saturday and Sunday), with unlimited prosecco for just £15 when ordering any item on the menu, perfect for those with a train timetable to stick to. The venue is huge,
As a steakhouse the menu is to be expected, an extensive mix of burgers and burnt ends, sirloins and squid, chips, churros and chimichurri. If anything it’s a little [i]too[/i] broad - with so much to choose from it might take you half of your 90 minute prosecco countdown to make a decision. Upon arrival your waiter will snap a Polaroid and illustrate with your arrival time - a handy tool to flash when you need a top up.
We skipped the starters and went straight in for the mains. In a meat feast kind of mood, I settled on a duo of smoked paprika chicken and chips with ribs, an absolutely enormous portion of meat that - accompanied by chips and a side of beans - left me totally stuffed. Though you certainly can’t complain about the portion sizes, the chicken was a little dry and I needed a blob of mayo to make it through, though my ribs were delicious. A side of crab mac ’n’ cheese, finished with samphire, was creamy and cheesy with a satisfyingly crunchy topping, just as it should be. My date plumped for one of the speciality cuts, the spiral fillet - a unique dish created by spiral cutting the steak fillet and marinating it in garlic and parsley for tenderness and flavour - with the addition of a couple of grilled prawns to make it a surf ’n’ turf (well, it was the weekend). While the presentation could have been better, the steak was deemed to be tasty and flavourful. Afterwards, if you have room for dessert, the churros sundae looked like an indulgent choice.
Despite being reasonably quiet, the service was a little slower than I would have expected and a couple of the dishes could have been better, but for an affordable and family-friendly bottomless brunch*, Bar + Block is a great option; conveniently located, a vast menu to suit literally every possible taste.
*Obviously not suggesting kids partake in the bottomless aspect, just that it’s a decent size venue with food options they’d enjoy…
