MRS WILLIAMS
from SOUTH BUCKS

Jan 11, 2011

My husband had a (mediocre) steak and I had a veal escalope (similar). The salad accompaniment consisted of a few leaves of rocket and one slice of a large, pulpy, tasteless tomato.
All other accompaniments were chargeable. I asked for boiled potatoes, expecting some nice, buttered Charlottes or similar. I received a dish of blue-ish, peeled, cheap potatoes sprinkled liberally with dried parsley. After a mouthful, I left them all, but no one was interested enough to ask me why.
I was told that I could not have a glass of wine, only a half-bottle. (Looking at the menu later, I don't think this was strictly true, but the result of a language problem.) I elected to join my husband in having an apple juice. It was the cheapest, from-concentrate juice and I would not have been surprised to find that water had been added.
A 4% service charge was automatically added to the bill, but my husband was given to understand that we should leave extra if we wanted to tip the waitress.

We first stumbled over this cosy restaurant by pure luck 15 years ago. Had a splendid meal that reminded us of the excellent food we normally find in France. No "dead" veggies here as often found in the UK but fresh carrots, haricot verts or whatever was on the menu - cooked just to our liking. Atmosphere was nice and service brilliant and we have since popped by whenever we are in London. Most recent visit was a week ago when we visited London in January for the first time. We wanted to celebrate a family birthday and decided this would be the place to go. Wise choice - food was lovely, wine pleasant and as always Mme makes everyone feel at home. I don't drink coffee - but my husband does and he assured me it was as good as the one he normally drinks at the local cafe in France during our holidays. To bad Denmark is to far away from London to make this our "local" restaurant. But we will be back for sure - next time we are in town. C and K Johansen, Denmark

Another of my favourite eateries when I am in the area & working in London.
I have been visiting since 2003. Another cosy and friendly
place where I can while the night away with good wine and food
Denise the owner and all the staff are very friendly. Its another oasis in a bustling world of cars and people. Top marks to all.

We had the best steak and fish seabass which were fantastic! Ever had at such a resonable price.

Not being a native of London, I had to select a restaurant without the luxury of a recommendation, after an abysmal meal in our hotel the night before. Denise's French Restaurant was chosen, an oasis in a sea of urban clamour.

Madamme was friendly and efficient, the food excellent (I relished the sea bass, cooked to perfection), the wine at just the right drinking temperature. And last, but by no means least, the coffee was as good as I have had in many a holiday in France. Oh, and it was a reasonable price too.

I shall return again, when I am next in London, and that is praise indeed.
