All In London Review

A brilliant meal, that’s all there is to say.

Sometimes you come across a restaurant that is so sublime you simultaneously want to keep it to yourself so you never struggle for a table yet also tell everyone because it’s so delicious others deserve to taste the joy. Sticky Mango is one of those restaurants and lucky for you dear reader I plumped for the latter.

This certainly has to be one of London’s best-kept secrets. For years the space housed an French, beloved by locals, but then they decided to take a chance and switch to Asian cuisine, and it seems to have paid off given Sticky Mango was awarded Best Fusion at the 2019 Golden Chopstick Awards. High praise indeed. Chef Owner Peter Lloyd develops dishes inspired by is travels in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, balancing beautiful flavours throughout dozens of dishes on an a la carte of nine- course tasting menu.

The first thing to note is the extensive and inclusive menu. Upon asking whether there was anything vegan and gluten free, my dining companion was presented with a whole new menu split into vegetarian, vegan, dairy and gluten free sections; needless to say she was more than impressed, never having been presented with such extensive options before and more used to having to scratch around a menu to try and find dishes she can enjoy.

A Thai green mango salad finished with candied ginger dressing and cashew nuts was a mouthful of refreshing crispness; a last taste of summer given the dire turn in weather we’ve been experiencing. I tucked into the soft shell crab bar bun, a tender treat stuffed with Asian slaw and sriracha mayo, before enjoying the black pepper prawns, oozing in sticky sauce and nicely juxtaposed with sweet chunks of dehydrated pineapple. Through a bowl of truffled teriyaki edamame and the starters were a winning combination of flavours.

The mains however really were the stars of the show. Indonesian style sea bass arrived lovingly grilled in a banana lead with pickled vegetables and lime, flaky and juicy with a side of steamed boo choi finished with miso butter and sesame seeds. The miso glazed black cod was amongst the best I’ve ever tasted. Sweet and sticky, falling apart at the first touch of a fork, finished with pickled daikon and cucumber salad, black sesame and fragrant herbs. Wok fried tenderstem broccoli arrived with water chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms and oyster sauce, while the piéce de résistance came in the form of crispy baby potatoes with a dangerously moreish peanut sauce and Asian mayonnaise. We both agreed it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had in London. For dessert you must try the signature Sticky Mango, a dish of black sticky rice with mango sorbet and coconut cream; deeply indulgent and perfect for hitting the sweet spot.

So there we have it. A brilliant meal, that’s all there is to say really. It’s definitely somewhere I’ll be visiting again and my vegan non-gluten friend unsurprisingly has already booked a return.
