Something for everyone in a romantic, cosy trattoria

This restaurant is in the middle of what is quaintly known as “Munster Village” – it wasn’t called that when I lived in a flat opposite 30 years ago. Anyway, getting there will be tricky for anyone who isn’t a local. Either a 10 minute walk from the Fulham Road or cut down Kingwood Road from the Fulham Palace Road. For the bikers amongst you, it’s next door to Gorgeous Bikes.

From the outside in the daylight it looks like one of those Continental seaside restaurants. There’s an established ivy plant growing over the walls that carve out a good sized terrace for al fresco eating. At night, it is filled with twinkling lights.

Inside it is warm and intimate. Dark tables and chairs. Some walls are brick and others are a soothing sage green. There’s an almost separate room which would be great for a private party. It’s like a tardis – the restaurant extends round to the back. There are funky light designs and ceiling fans.

We were seated at a table near large window doors that opened onto the terrace so there was a pleasant breeze. Soft nondescript Latino music played in the background (a bit later on it shifted to a sort of retro disco vibe).

At 730pm on a Monday evening (steak night – sirloins from £9.75, fillet £12.50. The dish that they are most proud of is a massive 1 kg for two Fiorentina T-Bone Steak from exclusive Tuscan Chianina beef at £59) the place was almost full. It was mostly younger folk – in their 20s and 30s – but there were a few older people with what appeared to be their adult children.

I was happy to see Aperol Spritz (£7) on the menu and apparently the regular happy hours where all cocktails are £5 are popular. But we ordered large glasses of Verdicchio (£8.75) which weren’t quite cold enough. I was a little disappointed at the wine list which felt a bit restricted – especially the whites - although there were wines from Italy, France, Spain and the New World. But you could get a bottle of Sicilian white from as little as £17.95 so the prices were OK.

But there’s something for everyone on the menu – 12” stone baked pizzas from £8.50, a variety of pasta dishes and an assortment of meat and fish dishes. The risotto of the day on our visit was blue cheese (£7.95/£10.95). Lobster features too.

The starter menu has a number of favourites – like salt and pepper squid (£7.95) and courgette flowers (£8.95). We waited a while for ours to arrive. My companion choose the chilli King prawns (£7.95) – presented on a rectangular plate with a substantial mound of leaves were four fat specimens. She needed the finger bowl.

I was delighted with my burrata (£7.50) – the highlight of my meal. The cheese from Puglia was white, light, fresh and creamy and it went perfectly with the lightly dressed rocket leaves, broad beans and red onion salad.

For her main course, my companion chose the fresh fish of the day – seabass – reasonably priced at £13.95. It was well cooked and she enjoyed the side of summer vegetables (£3.95) of asparagus, broad beans and peas.

My seafood linguine (£13.95) is a popular choice. And deservedly so. The garlic, chilli, parsley, white wine, cherry tomatoes and tomato sauce was creamy and had a good texture and flavour. I found the clams and mussels and a large piece of octopus as well as numerous chunks of calamari. It was topped with a grilled king prawn

We had lingered over our meal – it was such a delightful restaurant. So we were ready for desserts. My affogato (£6.50) was a triumph – a small fluted dish of ice cream with a shot glass of hot espresso and another of angelica liquor. My companion had two scoops of ice cream (£1.95 each) – the dark chocolate was amazing and the speckled chocolate chip as expected.

We hadn’t meant to spend the entire evening there but it was hard to leave. It’s a lovely restaurant with a well thought out menu offering traditional Italian favourites and some interesting alternatives. If I still lived across the road, I’d be a regular.

There are also Locale restaurants in Southbank and Blackheath.
