Really excellent food and quiet and unassuming service with a smile

Most people know that there are few Indian restaurants (curry shops) in Twickenham and there are two well known ones on Church Street. But this one has won numerous awards over the years and is much loved by the locals.

To be honest, we hadn’t planned to visit the other evening as we first popped into one of our local Indian restaurants in nearby Whitton. However, I was dismayed that they had installed television screens and we decided to take the bus the short journey to Twickenham.

As it was New Year’s Day it was quiet. But the staff were super-friendly and guided us to one of its lovely booths (nice copper panel on the walls and bench seating that would accommodate six at a squeeze). My companion wasn’t drinking alcohol (still recovering from New Year’s Eve) but I ordered a gin and tonic to go with our tap water.

While we munched on our poppadums (one spicy and one plain with a generous tray of pickles, onions and sauces) my companion ordered Hash Shasklik (£6.95) - boneless duck pieces grilled with onions, peppers, and tomatoes which was unusual and rather delicious. I opted for a Sheek Kebab (£4.50) which is minced lamb mixed with spices and herbs made into a finger shape and grilled in tandoor, served with fresh green salad. It was pretty much as you would expect.

For our main course, I choose Prawn Pathai (£8.50) which is cooked with onions and tomatoes. There were plenty of plump prawns although it wasn’t as hot, sweet and sour as I expected. It was a healthier choice than my usual cream filled sauces though. My companion ordered half a Tandoori Chicken on the bone (£7.95) which came out on a sizzling plate that smelled marvellous. He tucked in and was very happy although he didn’t eat the accompanying salad.

We also selected some Pilau rice (£2.50) which was light and lovely, a Peshawari Nan (£2.35) which was sweet from the coconut, some okra in a Bindi Bhajee (£3.75) which was cut into small pieces and firm to the bite (I hate it when it’s slimy) and probably my favourite dish and a Sag Aloo (£3.75) – where the potatoes were firm and the spinach delicious (this was my companion’s favourite dish).

The bill came to £48.35 and it wasn’t until we had left that I realised service hadn’t been included. So I popped back with a tip as the service was very good and I appreciated them working on a Bank Holiday (and not mentioning when I didn’t add a gratuity when I paid the bill).

So the moral of the story is that whilst one curry is very much like any other curry, it is worth taking the trouble to go to a great restaurant like Sheesh Mahal which has stood the test of time, offers an elegant, relaxed environment, the comfort of a private booth, really excellent food and quiet and unassuming service with a smile.
